FOSTER REQUIREMENTS

Thank you for your interest in fostering a rabbit for us. As you may be aware, the majority of the rabbits coming into our HRS fostering system were rescued directly off the streets or scheduled for euthanasia at a shelter. Each new foster home we can provide literally means one more life has been saved. We strive to work with our foster people as individuals who bring new depth to our fostering network. Our director interviews each prospective foster person and does a comprehensive evaluation of the applicant and care they are able to provide. Since each foster parent brings their unique background into our network, we attempt to match them with a rabbit or rabbits that will fit well into their environment and the level of care they can provide. Below are our general requirements for new foster parents.

  1. Should have at least 1-2 years experience in caring for a personal rabbit or rabbits or have done extensive research on proper care.
  2. Must be able to provide a safe exercise area in a bunny-proofed space safe from small children and other pets.
  3. All other rabbits in the household must be spayed/neutered and current on vaccinations, Personal rabbits should be housed in a different location than the foster rabbit(s).
  4. Should be prepared to care for the foster rabbit until they are adopted. A rabbit can be in our foster system for as little as 2 weeks or as long as a year.
  5. Must be at least 25 years of age.
  6. Although foster parents always have the option to adopt a foster rabbit, you should be mentally prepared to cut ties with the rabbit to turn them over to their new adoptive home when one becomes available.
  7. Must communicate regularly with the Director to discuss personality, habits, health, etc of the foster rabbit.
  8. Must send the Director HQ photos of the foster rabbit for adoption profiles.
  9. Must allow a HRS Chicago representative into your home for a visit to ensure that your home is safe for the potential new foster rabbit. All members of the household are required to be present for the visit.
  10. Must review and sign our foster contract.
